Tenbury August Sheep Sale

 Nick Champion reports an excellent entry of 3,530 store lambs, breeding and cull ewes and rams was forward at the first seasonal sale on Saturday 9th August 2014. Trade was better than anticipated although prices were slightly down on 2013 due to the weaker slaughter trade and reduced exports. 

3,318 mixed store lambs sold to a top of £75.00 for Texel x from D R & E J Spilsbury, Eastham which were first prize winners in the show section judged by M. Simcock, Bromyard. Next best was £74.00 for Suffolk x from M S, J D & N J Ward, Eastham which were second prize winners and their annual consignment of 735 Suffolk x averaged £58.00. Third prize winner was F T Edwards & Son, St Michaels for Suffolk x which made £69.50. The annual consignment of 722 Suffolk x and Charollais x from J W Spilsbury & Co, Orleton also met a strong demand selling to a top of £66. 

The general trade for stronger, fitter lambs was from £64 to £69 with medium quality lambs selling well from £58 to £63 and small lambs selling from £47 to £57, whilst small hill wethers sold from £30.20 to £44.50. The overall average was £57.49. 

108 cull and grazing ewes and rams met a very fast trade although there were no strong well fleshed ewes on offer. Top price was £74 for Suffolk x ewes from C Corfield, Mules sold to £68.50 and hill ewes sold to £55.80. Rams sold to £78. The overall average was £51.60. 

104 breeding ewes and rams sold to a firm demand on the older ewes with a top of £84.00 for 3/4 years old Suffolk x from S & E & P I Kerby, Hanley Childe. Full mouthed/aged mules sold at £70.50 and Suffolk x at £80. Badger Face 2 year old rams sold at £68.80.
